Brasil: Paraty.

Paraty is a nice little town located next to the beach and sorrounded by nature, it has a nice colonial architecture and it´s a place to stay a few days and relax. There are loads of beautiful beaches in Paraty, one of the nicest one is Trinidade. There are also loads of islands with white sand and vegetacion, you can visit this islands by boat and have a great day on the beach, the boats departs from Paraty´s pier every day, on the boat the locals play brasilian music, offer you food and drinks, you can also swim and snorkel.

Paraty es un pueblo ubicado al lado de playa y rodeado por naturaleza, tiene una arquitectura colonial y es un buen lugar para quedarse unos días y relajarse. Hay muchos playas muy buenas en Paraty , las mejores están en Trinidade. También hay muchas islas con arena blanca y vegeteción, se pueden visitar las islas en bote y pasarla bién en la playa, los botes salen desde el puerto de Paraty todos los días, en este paseo la gente local pone música brasilera, le ofrecen comida y bebidas, además se puede nadar y hacer snorkeling.

There are many places to stay here, there are little hotels (called Pousadas) in the city center, here you can find restaurants, some little bars and markets. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the local people are very friendly.

Hay muchos lugares donde alojarse en Paraty, hay pequeñas posadas o pousadas en el centro del pueblo, aca pueden también encontrar restaurantes, algunos bares y mercados locales. La atmosfera es muy relajada y la gente local es muy simpatica.

Paraty is touristy and the restaurants can be expensive but I can recommend a great place, Restaurant Trapiche, a little typical brasilian restaurant, they have the best sea food ever, and great caipirinhas. This place is located on the main street and is one of the best places I know.

Paraty es turístico y puede ser caro, pero puedo recomendar un buen lugar, el Restaurante Trapiche, un pequeño lugar, típico brasilero, tienen la mejor comida marina del lugar, y buenas caipirinhas. Este lugar esta en la calle principal y es uno de los mejores lugares que conozco.

A great place to stay is Jabacuara beach, 20 min from the center, there are many Pousadas and hostels to stay, a great restaurant here is La Luna, just in front of the sea with great sea food. 

Un buen lugar para quedarse es la playa Jabacuara, a 20 min. del centro, hay muchas Posadas y hostels aca, un buen restaurante aca es La Luna, frente al mar y con muy buena comida marina.

Get to Paraty is very easy, just take the bus from Rio (4 hrs.) or from Sao Paulo. The bus journey along the coast has amazing views of all the beaches and little towns, Paraty is a great place if you want to relax and have a few caipirinhas.

Llegar a Paraty es muy sencillo, solo tome el bus desde Rio (4 hrs.) o desde Sao Paulo. Durante el viaje se pueden ver las playas y pueblos de la costa brasilera, Paraty es un buen lugar para relajarse unos días y tomar unas caipirinhas.

Brasil: Sao Paulo, (English / Español)

Sao Paulo is the biggest city in Brasil and South America, it has a population between 23 and 24 millions, all the big companies and business are in Sao Paulo, is a great place to stay for a couple of days, visit the museums, go out for a drink or to the club and see a football game. The F1 take place in Sao Paulo every year and there many concerts of the most popular bands.You can also visit the Japanese quarter (Libertade) try some Sushi or go to the karaoke. 

Sao Paulo es la ciudad más grande de Brasil y Sudamérica, tiene una población de entre 22 a 24 millones de personas, todas las grandes empresas y negocios están en Sao Paulo, es un excelente lugar para quedarse un par de días, visitar los museos, salir a bailar o ver un partido de futbol. Cada año se corre la Formula 1 en Sao Paulo y hay muchos conciertos de las mejores bandas. También se puede visitar el barrio Japones (Libertade) probar Sushi o ir al Karaoke. 

The best Museum here is the Art Museum of Sao Paulo (MASP), there are also many things to do at the city center, you can visit the Catedral Metropolitana, the biggest in South America and the Edificio Italia, this is one of the tallest buildings in Sao Paulo, there is a restaurant on the top and you can have a drink and enjoy the view of the city, they charge you to get in but it has a very nice view. If you are hungry you can visit the local market called Mercado Municipal, is a huge local market with loads of products like cheese, sousages, meat, ham, vegetables and exotic fruits from all Brazil.

El mejor museo es el Museo de Arte de Sao Paulo (MASP), también hay muchas cosas para hacer en el centro como visitar la Catedral Metropolitana, la más grande de Sudamérica y el Edificio Italia, uno de los más altos de Sao Paulo, hay un restaurante en el piso más alto donde puede tomar un trago y disfrutar la vista de la ciudad, se paga por entrar pero la vista es muy buena. Si tienen hambre puede visitar el Mercado Municipal, es un lugar enorme y tiene muchos productoso como quesos, salchichas, carnes, jamón, vegetales u frutas exóticas de todo Brasil

The most important football teams in Sao Paulo are Corinthians and Sao Paulo FC., both have great players and loads of fans, you can watch a football game and enjoy the atmosphere, then maybe go for a few beers with the local people. 

Los clubes más importantes de futbol de Sao Paulo, són Corinthians y Sao Paulo FC., ambos tienen excelentes jugadores y muchos fanáticos, puede ver un partido de futbol y disfrutar del ambiente del estadio, luego quiza pueda ir a tomar unas cervezas con los fanaticos locales.

La Paz, Bolivia, witches market, death road and dodgy prisions. (English and Español)

La Paz is the highest capital city in the world and an amazing place to visit.It´s very genuine, very Bolivia ! They dont try to be a western city, they made Mc Donalds broke up and go home because they prefer their local products,it´s a unique place, people speak their native lenguage use their typical clothes. Everything in La Paz is genuine.

La Paz es la capital más alta del mundo y un lugar increible par avisitar, es muy genuino y muy Bolivia! Ellos no intentan parecer una ciudad occidental, lograron que McDonalds se vaya a la quiebra ya que prefieren consumir sus  productos locales, es un lugar único la gente habla en sus lenguas nativas y usan sus ropas tipicas, todo en La Paz es único.

On the things you must see in La Paz is the Witches Market, located on the city center, it became more touristy but you still can see the old ladies saling poisons, dodgy cactus and magic stuff. Ask before take a picture because they can get angry and throw you a rock.

Algo que no se pude perder en La Paz es el Mercado de Brujas, ubicado en el centro, se ha vuelto más turístico ultimamente pero aún se pueden ver a las señoras de edad vendiendo posiones, catus y substancias mágicas.

Something you cant miss in La Paz is the Death Road or The World´s Most Dangerous Road, from La Paz to Cororico, the most dangerous bike ride in South America. Its about 64 Km. downhill in a  dirty narrow road and really fun. An awesome day !

Algo que no se puede perder es el Camino de La Muerte, de La Paz a Coroico, la ruta de bicicleta más peligrosa y famosa de Sudamérica, son 64 Km. en bajada por trocha y barro, los caminos son muy angostos pero va a pasarla muy bien !

San Pedro prision

A place you must not visit is San Pedro prision, it´s famous because an english drug dealer, Thomas, was caught by the police and he went to the prision, he found out there were cocaine labs and started to work there to get some money, then he started to do prision tours for the backpackers, afterwards he got free. There are not tours anymore

Un lugar que debe visitar es la prisión de San Pedro, es famosa ya que un traficante inglés, Thomas, fue arrestado por la policia y llevado a prisión, luego descubrió que habian laboratorios de cocaina y comenzo a trabajar ahí para ganar algún dinero, luego de unos años salió libre. Ya no se ofrecen tours a la prisión oficialmente, pero puede intentar ingresar si se siente valiente.

Another things to do in La Paz are to visit the Moon Valley (rock formations) and go out to the many  bars and clubs  there, I always go to Olivers pub (on the city center) and Mongos, La Paz is a great party city. There are great restaurants as well like Mongos, Maphraon (Thai food)  and La Luna. 

Enjoy La Paz, is a great backpackers destination.

Otras lugares para visitar en La Paz son el Valle de la Luna (formaciones rocosas) y los bares y clubs de la ciudad, siempre voy a Olivers Pub (en el centro) y a Mongos. La Paz tiene mucha vida noctura, hay buenos restaurantes también como Mongos, Maphraon (comida Tailandesa) y La Luna.

Iguazú Falls, a Natural Wonder. (English / Español)

  The Iguazu falls are one of the most amazing places to visit in South America, there are located between the border of the state of Parana (Brazil) and Misiones (Argentina). The falls are divided in 275 different jumps with 60 to 82 mts high and the edge of the border is about 2.7 Km long. The most impressive fall is the Devil´s Throat, with 82 mts. in the Argentinian side. The falls come from the Iguazu river, located in Brasil, near Curitiba city. The Iguazu falls marks the border between 3 countries, Brasil, Argentina and Paraguay.

Las cataratas de Iguazu es uno de los lugares más espectaculares de Sudamérica, están ubicadas entre las ciudades fronterizas de Paraná (Brasil) y Misiones (Argentina). Las cataratas están divididas en 275 saltos con 60 a 82 metros de altura y el largo del borde es de 2.7 Km. La caída más impresionante es la Garganta del Diablo, con 82 metros de altura en el lado argentino. El agua de las  cataratas viene del rio Iguazú, ubicado en Brasil, cercano Curitiba. Las Cataratas de Iguazú delimitan la frontera de 3 países, Brasil, Argentina y Paraguay.

 Foz do Iguazu is the city on the Brasilian side of the falls, it has an international airport with flights from all South America. If you are coming from Argentina you will have to go to Puerto Iguazu, the town at the border, it has an international airport as well.

If you are coming by bus you can take the bus from Campo Grande to Foz do Iguazu (16 hrs.) there are buses from Curitiba (14 hrs.), Sao Paulo (16 hrs.) and Rio de Janeiro as well (22 hrs.). You can also get there from Paraguay by bus. You can visit the capital Asunción and then take the bus to Ciudad del Este (Paraguay Border) and then go into Foz do Iguazu.

La ciudad en el lado brasilero de las cataratas es Foz do Iguazu, tiene un aeropuerto internacional con vuelos que llegan desde toda Sudamérica. Si viene desde Argentina tendrá que ir primero a Puerto Iguazú, el pueblo en la frontera argentina, aquí también hay un aeropuerto internacional.

Si viene desde Brasil debe tomar el bus desde Campo Grande a Foz do Iguazú (16 hrs.), hay buses desde Curitiba (14 hrs.), Sao Paulo (16 hrs.) y Rio de Janeiro (22 hrs.). También se puede llegar en bus desde Paraguay, puede visitar primero Asunción, la capital paraguaya y luego tomar el bus a Ciudad del Este (frontera de Paraguay con Brasil) y luego pasar a Foz do Iguazu.

Garganta el Diablo / Devil´s Throat

  There are many activities to do in both side of the falls. At the brasilian side you can visit the Iguazu National Park, there are walking paths, view points and bridges where you can walk and see the falls from very close. From the brasilian side of the falls you can take the helicopter ride over the water falls or visit the Bird Park, with many species of exotic birds from the amazon rainforest. A good option is to visit the Itaipu Dam, this hydroelectric dam is located on Parana river, between Brasil and Paraguay and supplies 90 % of the electricity consumed by Paraguay and 19% by Brasil.

Hay muchas actividades para hacer en ambos lados de las cataratas. En el lado brasilero puede visitar el Parque Nacional Iguazú, hay rutas para caminar, miradores y puentes donde uno puede caminar y ver las cataratas de muy cerca. Desde el lado brasilero puede tomar el vuelo en helicóptero sobre las cataratas o visitar el Parque de las Aves donde hay muchas especies de la amazonia. Otra buena opción es visitar la Central Hidroeléctrica de Itaipu, ubicada sobre el rio Paraná, la hidroeléctrica esta entre Brasil y Paraguay y produce el 90% de la energía consumida en Paraguay y 19% de la energía consumida en Brasil.

At the Argentinian side you can visit the Iguazu National Park and walk on the upper and lower circuit of bridges that are around the park. You have the best views from this bridges and the view points located around the park. You can take the little train to Devil´s Throat (20 min.) and see this impressive falls, you will get really wet here !. The best option here is to take the speed boat excursion into the falls and see it from close, this is an amazing experience.

En el lado argentino puede visitar el Parque Nacional Iguazú y caminar por los puentes de los  circuitos inferior y superior que hay alrededor del parque. Se puede tener las mejores vistas de los puentes y miradores que hay aqui. También puede tomar el pequeño tren que va a la Garganta del Diablo (20 min.) y ver estas impresionantes caídas de agua y mojarse bastante. La mejor opción es tomar la excursión en bote a las cataratas para verlas muy de cerca, está es una experiencia increíble.  

After a day in the falls the best thing to do is go to a show of Brasilian and Latin music with an amazing diner. You can see a show of Tango, Samba, music from Paraguay, Chile, Perú and a capoeira show. About the food, there are loads of different kinds of meat, fish and pastas and very good vegetarian options, there are also great desserts.

Luego de pasar el día en las cataratas lo mejor es ir a una cena con show de música brasilera y latinoamericana, puede ver un show de Samba, Tango y música de Paraguay, Chile,  Perú y un show de capoeria. Acerca de la comida, hay gran variedad de carnes, pescados y buenas opciones vegetarianas, también hay muy buenos postres.

Sometimes, on rainy season, the volume of water of the falls can increase and  gets really big, the people in the park has to close some of the bridges and the Devil´s Throat because it can get dangerous.

A veces, en las temporadas de lluvias, el volumen de las cataratas se incremente y se vuelven enormes, la gente del parque debe cerrar algunos de los puentes y la Garganta del Diablo ya que se puede volver peligroso.

Brasil: Bonito, Snorkeling in Rio do Prata.

Bonito is the capital of ecotourism in Brasil, is a beautiful town sorrounded by forests, lakes, rives and waterwalls. There are many activities to do in Bonito like swimming, tubbing, diving, explore caverns and lakes but the most important is the snorkeling in Rio da Prata.

Bonito es la capital del ecoturismo en Brasil, es un bonito lugar rodeado de bosques, lagos, rios y cascadas. Hay muchas actividades para hacer en Bonito como nadar en lagos, tubbing, bucear, explorar cavernas y lagos pero la excursión más importante es el snorkeling en Rio da Prata. 

Snorkeling in Rio da Prata is one of the best excursions I have done in Brasil, the water is really clear and you can see many kind of fish and another animals like caymans and tapirs. Rio da Prata is a sanctuary of nature and people in this place  really care and look after it. On this activity you will float for more than an hour in the crystal water, watching loads of fish and plants, the guides are great and they will teach you how to float and see the wildlife

El snorkeling en Rio da Prata es una de las mejores excursiones que he hecho en Brasil, el agua es realmente transparantey se puede ver muchos tipos de peces y otros animales como caimanes y tapires. Rio da Prata es un santuario natural y la gente de aca cuida mucho este lugar. En esta actividad va a flotar en el rio por más de una hora observando peces y plantas, los guias són muy buenos y le enseñaran como flotar en el rio y observar la naturaleza.

After the snorkeling you will have time to relax in the hammocks and have a great lunch in this sanctuary, you can buy a cd with the pictures of the excursion or rent a water proof camera.

Luego del snorkeling tendrá tiempo para descansar y relajarse en las hamacas y almorzar en este santucario, puede comprar un cd con las fotos de la excursión o alquilar una camara a prueba de agua.

Bonito is located at 5/6  hours from Pantanal at just 5 hours from Campo Grande, the capital of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. There are loads of good hostels and lodges here and many good tour operators. My favorite hotel here is Pousada Muito Bonito, www.muitobonito.com.br, located on the city center and they offer tours as well. There are also good restaurants with typical food and a few good pubs to go for a caipirinha.  

Bonito esta ubicado a 5/6 horas del Pantanal y solo a 5 horas de Campo Grande, es la capital de Mato Grosso do Sul. Hay muchos buenos hoteles aca y muy buenos tour operadores.  Pantanal is one of the world´s largest wetland, it´s located in Mato Grosso do Sul state, in Brasil. The Pantanal extends also into Bolivia and Paraguay and the estimated area is about 195000 Square Km. It gets water from Paraguay river and another tributaries, the rainy season the water level raises between 2 abd 5 meters and gets really flooded.

El Pantanal es una de las áreas inundadas más grandes del mundo,  se encuentra localizado en el estado de Mato Grosso do Sul , en Brasil, llegando también a  Bolivia y Paraguay, abarca un área de 195000 Km. cuadrados. El agua llega desde el rio Paraguay, varios tributarios y por las intensas lluvias, durante la temporada de lluvias el nivel del agua aumenta de 2 a 5 metros y se inunda todo.

 



The Pantanal ecosystem has about 300 mammals species, 480 reptiles species and more than 1000 species of birds. Is very easy to see tucans. macaws, caimans and capybaras but if you are lucky you will probably see a Jaguar or a river otter!

 El ecosistema del Pantanal cuenta con aproximadamente 300 especies de mamíferos, 480 especies de reptiles y 1000 especies de aves. Facilmente se pueden observar tucanes, guacamayos, caimanes y capibaras, si tiene suerte puede llegar a ver un jaguar o una nutria de rio.

How to get to the Pantanal.

You can go to Pantanal from Corumba city, at the border between Brasil and  Bolivia. You need to go through migrations and drive between 2 and 3 hours, maybe more in rainy season, the tour operators and jungle lodges can arrange the transport if you make a reservation with them. To get to Corumba you can come from Bolivia  (Puerto Suarez town) and just cross the border, you can change money there.

You can also go to Pantanal from Campo Grande city, the capital of the state, there are buses everyday. You can get to Campo Grande by bus from Sao Paulo or Foz do Iguazu, there is an airport as well. 

 

Como llegar al Pantanal.

Se puede llegar al Pantanal desde la ciudad de Corumba, en la frontera de Brasil  con Bolivia. Necesita pasar migraciones y manejar de 2 a 3 horas, quiza un poco más en epoca de lluvias, los tour operadores y albergues de selva pueden conseguir el transporte si hacen una reserva. Para llegar a Corumba deben venir de Bolivia (Puerto Suarez) y cruzar la frontera, se puede cambiar dinero aca.
También se puede llegar desde Campo grande que es la capital del estado de Mato Grosso do Sul. Se puede llegar a Campo Grande en bus desde  Sao Paulo y Foz do Iguazu, también hay vuelos desde las principales ciudades de Brasil.

There are some good jungle lodges in Pantanal, I always go to Passo do Lontra, they have great cabins an dorms, air con, great meals, river excursions, jungle hikes, fishing tours, this jungle lodge is located next to Miranda river, you can go swimming if you want, there are piranhas and caymans but they dont bite. A great activity here is too sit down on the pier and fish some piranhas having a cold beer and watching the jungle, you never know when you will see a river otter or a jaguar around here, just be patience. This place also has bridges around it so you can go for a walk and spot howler monkeys and capybaras.

Hay muy buenos albergues en Pantanal, yo siempre voy a Paso do Lontra, tienen  buenos bungalows y dormitorios, aire condicionado, buenas comidas, excursiones en bote por el rio,  caminatas en la selva, tours de pesca, el albergue está al lado del rio Miranda, pueden bañarse en el rio si desean, hay pirañas y caimanes, pero no atacan. Lo mejor es sentarse en el muelle y pescar tomando una cerveza helada, observando la selva, uno nunca sabe cuando se puede ver una nutria de rio o un jaguar por ahi, solo hay que tener paciencia. Alrededor de este lugar hay puentes por los que uno puede andar por su cuenta y observar monos ahulladores y capibaras.

You can also visit a Fazenda (farm), this fazendas are huge, there are horses and  loads of wildlife around. The locals here do hiking excursions to see animals and horse riding, you can also spend a night here sleeping in hammocks. There are loads of mosquitoso so take a good insect repellent and a mosquito net. 

Se puede visitar también alguna Fazenda (granja), son granjas enormes, hay caballos y se puede observar vida silvestre como caimanes y aves. Los guías locales organizan paseos a caballos y caminatas en la selva, también se pueden quedar a pasar la noche en unan hamaca. Hay muchos mosquitos asi que lleven repelente de insectos y mosquitero.

Pantanal is a great place to stay 2 or 3 nights and relax watching the wildlife, fishing and taking amazing pictures,  but is not a good place if you hate mosquitos. Weather is really hot here so take some water on the hiking and wear long sleves because the mosquitos, to take a rain poncho is a good idea as well.

 Pantanal es un lugar para quedarse 2 o 3 noches y relajarse observando la naturaleza y tomar algunas fotos, pero si no tolera los mosquitos es mejor solo por un tiempo corto. El clima es realmente caliente asi que lleven bastante agua para las caminatas, ropa de manga larga y un poncho para la lluvia.

After a few days in Pantanal you can continue traveling to Bonito, a nice city sorrounded by forest, rivers and water falls. You can also travel to Bolivia, going first from Pantanal to Corumba, cross the border to Puerto Suarez (Bolivia) and then take the train or flight to Santa Cruz. 

 



 Luego de pasar unos días en el Pantanal puede continuar el viaje a Bonito, un bonito pueblo rodeado de bosques, rios y cascadas. También puede viajar a Bolivia, para esto debe ir de Pantanal a Corumba, cruzar la frontera a Puerto Suarez (Bolivia) y de ahi tomar el tren o un vuelo a Santa Cruz.
