Train to Uyuni |
You can go from La Paz to Uyuni from the border with Argentina at Villazón (Arg.) and Tupiza (Bolivia), to do this you must go first from Tupiza to Potosi (spend the night there) and then drive to Uyuni, that’s because the buses and roads are better than the ones from Tupiza to Uyuni. You can go from La Paz to Uyuni by bus, but is a very bad journey, buses are really bad here and takes about 12 hours to get there. The best option is to from La Paz to Oruro by bus (3 hours, departs every 30 min.) and then take the train to Uyuni (FCA), check the time table at www.fca.com.bo, it´s a 7 hour journey and is a good train , clean, safe, they give you blankets and pillows and it also has a good restaurant. Always be careful with your belongings at buses and train stations here. If you are in Potosi you can take the local bus to Uyuni, is about 6 hours journey. Uyuni is a little town with just 10000 people and easy to walk around, is quiet, cold and there are loads of tour operators, little restaurants and a few hostels. Is very cold when you get there and is difficult to find a hotel here so better do your reservation in advance. There are many hotels in Uyuni, just a few blocks from the train station, I always recommend Toñito Hotel, www.bolivianexpeditions.com, at Ferroviaria Av., they have great rooms, is safe, clean, there are heaters, hot water , the staff is excellent and they have the best restaurant in Uyuni and the best pizzas in Southamerica, Minuteman Pizza. The hotel as a good tour operator for Uyuni Salt Flats, Toñito Tours, they do 1 and 2 day tours on which you´ll stay at the salt hotel, that’s and an amazing experience. Another good tour operator is Andes Salt Expeditions (ASE) they have an office in Uyuni. If you want to go to Chile you can do the 3 day tour from Uyuni to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.
The Salt Flats Tour.
The tour starts in Uyuni town, after breakfast the 4x4 cars will take you first to the train cementery, 3 Km. outside of town, here you can see trains that were robbed by the American villains Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid.
Afterwards you will visit Colchani town and the salt factories, the main economic activity here is the extraction of salt and you can see how the locals do it and leave a tip for them, there are also some shops to buy souvenirs made of salt. This is also the last chance to find a toilet. After that you will enter to the salt flats with the 4x4 cars, you will see the locals working there, please ask before take a picture and don’t step or play with the little salt piles or salt triangles because is their work. You can take some pictures here and the guide will explain about the history of the salt flats. You will continue driving here and visit the salt museum and have lunch, after that the cars will take you to Fish Island, in the middle of the salt deposit with giant cactus and amazing views, you will have time to take some crazy pictures and then come back to Uyuni.
On the 2 day /1 night tour you will stay at the salt hotel, located outside the salt flats, everything is made of salt bricks here, salt beds, tables, walls etc. Meals are included and provided by the tour operator. There are showers with hot water, blankets, pillows, and electricity from 7 to 9 aprox. The locals sale wine and beers here and there are another tourists as well. It´s basic but is ok for one night and the experience is really good. Next day you will continue driving in the salt flats and take more pictures, some operators visit Tunupa volcano and sometimes you can see flamingos around here. You will be back to Uyuni in the afternoon.
On the 3 day/2 night tour you will visit the train cementery, Colchani salt factories, Fish Island and stay in the Salt Hotel on the first night, on the second day you will go through the Siloli desert and visit places like Laguna Colorada (the red lake),volcanoes, deserts, you will visit hot springs, see geysers and flamingos ! an amazing adventure and a long way on the 4WD cars, on the second night you will stay at a very basic place at 4000 masl. , no showers and big dorms, is freezing here and it the temperature could be about -15 degrees celcius, but is the only place around here. On the third day, very early in the morning you will continue driving and visit the Green Lake (laguna verde) and cross the border between Bolivia and Chile. The tour operator´s cars will drop you off at the Bolivian border, they will book for you a bus to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, just 2 hours journey, then you will go through customs and enter to Chile. You are not allowed to take any fruits, seeds, animals, coca leaf or organic products from Bolivia to Chile.
Please don’t forget to take water (2 / 3 Liters), torch, sun block, sunglasses, toilet paper and camera, but if you are staying one or more nights in the salt flats you must also take sleeping bag, warm clothes, hat, gloves and a towel. If you are going to do the 3 day / 2 night tour from Uyuni to Chile you will have to take all your stuff and please don’t forget your passports. About the crazy pictures here, you can take props like a medium size toy, a pringle can, a bottle of wine or something big, colorful and bright. Is better to use bright and colorful clothes here.
